Attic Insulation Top-Up To R-60
An attic insulation top-up blows fresh cellulose over the layer already in place and lifts the attic to R-60. For a chilly top floor in an older Orléans house, it is the quickest fix there is.
Details and pricesIce dams start when warmth leaking out of the house softens roof snow from underneath and the water freezes again at the cold overhang. Ice dams then hold back more meltwater, which can creep under the shingles and stain the ceiling.
We stop ice dams where they begin, with air sealing, deeper attic insulation and soffit vents that stay open.
Ottawa sees about 232 cm of snow in a normal winter, and most days from December to February stay below freezing. That long, snowy season gives ice dams months to build, mostly over rooms with thin insulation above them.
A row of long icicles and small ice dams on one side of the house usually points to heat escaping into the attic right above it.
Air sealing comes first, because most of the heat behind ice dams is warm house air leaking upward. Next, the insulation is brought up to depth so the rest of the heat stays in the rooms below and the snow above stays frozen, which is what keeps ice dams from forming.
Last, baffles keep the soffit vents open so cold air can sweep under the roof deck. Ventilation helps, but on its own it will not stop ice dams.
A brown patch on a bedroom ceiling beside an outside wall is often water from ice dams. We check the insulation over that spot for damp and look at the roof boards for staining.
Soaked insulation under ice dams may need to come out first, which our page on wet attic insulation explains.
Raking snow off the lower edge of the roof can ease ice dams during a bad week, and a roofer can steam away ice that has already formed. Neither one changes the heat leak that causes ice dams, so they return with the next snowfall.
Attic work to prevent ice dams is priced like a top-up with extra sealing, often $1.75 to $3.50 per square foot of attic floor at Ontario market rates. Your written quote gives the firm figure for ending ice dams over each part of the house.
Call (343) 301-5501 and we will find the heat leaks behind your ice dams. You can also return to the Orléans Attic Insulation home page for our other services.
Two of these often go together in Orléans, such as sealing the ceiling and then topping it up.

Cellulose attic insulation is blown in as loose fill and settles into a dense, even layer across the whole attic floor. It reaches the low corners at the eaves where batts often stop short.

Attic insulation removal pulls out old fill that is flattened, dirty or damaged, so the attic can be sealed and refilled properly. It leaves through a sealed vacuum hose and goes away in bags.

Attic air sealing plugs the openings between your living space and the attic above. Heated air rises out through pot lights, wire holes, vent stacks and the hatch, carrying moisture along with it.

Wet attic insulation holds little heat, and left damp it can feed mould on the roof boards. We find out where the water came from, take out the damaged material, and reinsulate once the wood is dry.

Vermiculite insulation is a light, pebbly loose fill in silver-gold to grey-brown. Some vermiculite insulation sold in Canada before 1990, including the Zonolite brand, came from a mine with natural asbestos in it. Not all of it contains asbestos, and nobody can tell by looking.

The Ontario attic insulation rebate comes from the Home Renovation Savings program, run across the province by Save on Energy together with Enbridge Gas. Its attic-only stream pays up to $1,250 once a thin attic is brought to R-50, and it does not ask for a home energy assessment first.

Two numbers drive attic insulation cost: how many square feet the attic floor covers and how many inches it needs. You get the going rate when you call and a firm written price after the free check.
